Title: Complex Multiplication

Abstract: Gauss showed that only a compass and ruler are required to divide a circle into 17 equal parts.   He was so fond of this fact, he wanted a regular 17-gon on his tombstone.  “Complex multiplication” is a similar construction, in which the circle gets replaced with a torus (donut shape).  David Hilbert is said to have remarked that the theory of complex multiplication of elliptic curves was not only the most beautiful part of mathematics but of all science.  In this talk, we’ll explain the unity of two facts:  one, that the polynomial x^2 + x + 41 assumes prime values for x = 0,…,39, and two, that
